Summer Catalogue 2011 - 2012

Dates: 29 Nov, 2011 - 4 Feb, 2012

We take pleasure in presenting our Summer Catalogue for 2011/2012. Our exhibition includes a wide range of artwork once again, with works from three centuries of New Zealand Art. We open with a fine 19th century painting of Lake Waikaremoana dated 1896 by A E Aldis – which underlines once again how underrated this colonial artist is. We were surprisingly blessed with many good artists who were active during this period and many are not well known or recorded due to the short time span they painted in New Zealand. Several artists like Aldis were here for a short time and he is recorded as exhibiting and advertising in the Auckland Society of Arts Catalogue in 1888. His studio is listed at 108 Victoria Street and his paintings were in the main of early Auckland. The work in our catalogue is however a large and striking work of Lake Waikaremoana in the Hawkes Bay.The feature painting, one from the 20th century is a rare cubist series work by Dame Louise Henderson. This period of Henderson’s work is generally accepted as her best and along with John Weeks, Kase Jackson and Colin McCahon they were the first exponents of this style in New Zealand. A work from the same 1950’s period recently sold at auction in excess of $80,000. This is an oil on board and a good size at 82.5 x 100cm and extremely well priced. New works by our gallery artists include a fine new original print by Fatu Feu’u, new paintings by Nick Wall, Mark Wooller, Alexander Bartleet, Robyn Kahukiwa, Philippa Blair, Amy Melchior, Rozi Demant, Viky Garden, Tyrone Layne, Annette Isbey, Justin Summerton, Raymond Jennings and others. Two new works by recent exhibitor Amy Melchior are also included in the exhibition and these exquisite works really need to be seen first-hand to be appreciated. In the recent review by T J McNamara he stated, “Each painting seems to have at least three levels of perception. The result is a charming and rich decorative quality…”
Outstanding works from two collections include a Don Binney, two fine Toss Woollaston oils, John Weeks, Francis McCracken and others. The whole catalogue is also on-line and further works will be added to the catalogue as they arrive.
