“Exciting New Talent” in Parnell
An exciting new talent exhibits a first show at a Parnell Gallery next week. Haneui Kim is a young surrealist artist recently graduated from Elam Art School. While Haneui’s paintings are surreal and quite bizarre they are tempered with extremely precise traditional painting and drawing techniques. Many of Haneui’s works are figurative, featuring herself, or in the latest series of work, a turtle which she has painted as a metaphor as she sees herself. Viewers are left to draw their own conclusions from the many anomalous imagery in the paintings such as turtles, flowers, raindrops, sugar-cubes, feathers, hair and fish, painted into the landscapes.

Young emerging artists have become popular with art collectors recently taking into account the more affordable price bracket. While it can be difficult it is also an exciting challenge to try and pick the next ‘big’ artist. Many dealer galleries chance their arm and their finances on these young artists, something that can be fraught with risks “Every young budding Pat Hanly, Colin McCahon or Bill Hammond mounted an inaugural exhibition at one time and this is one very exciting aspect of the art world” says long time gallery director Warwick Henderson.

Warwick Henderson Gallery has exhibited many young artists’ inaugural exhibitions in Auckland, several of whom have gone on to have successful Art careers. These artists include Rozi Demant, April Shin, Nick Wall, Justin Summerton, Tyrone Layne and within the next six months two other young artists Haneui Kim and Alex Bartleet will exhibit. “Haneui Kim has stood out as an extremely talented and original artist” says Henderson. “The hardest thing for new artists is to do something original” says Henderson “but then the other elements such as technique, composition, consistency and resolution need to be evident as well. Haneui has achieved this and we look forward to this very talented artists’ first exhibition”.
