Nick Wall - Colour and Light

Dates: 5 Sep, 2006 - 23 Sep, 2006

Minimalist artist Nick Walls' latest works are a continuation into his exploration of painting as an expression of his purist, Zen philosophy. Wall refers to colour and light as the essential elements of Impressionism, but employs these components in an altogether different manner. Wall is chiefly inspired by the diversity of the american abstract expressionists. From Pollock to Reinhardt whose notion of a "content free art" influenced his initial ethos for this series, and of course Max Gimblett, whom Wall has assisted in various projects.[read more] Wall endeavours to work without forced motifs or content, and let his paintings develop without conscious thought. For this reason they are governed by the principal elements of his oeuvre – the square and circle. Colour and Light is rendered in Wall’s diagrammatic vocabulary, in which he discusses, in his symbolic language of the circle, square and triangle, the notion of existing in something greater than our physical environment.
