Dates: 3 Mar, 2015 – 21 Mar, 2015

Our show opening in March “Adaption” includes several young and emerging artists who have recently graduated from fine art schools such as Elam and Whitecliffe.

Grace Wright, a standout artist from Elam, paints in an abstract expressionist and gestural style and will be the subject of an essay by art critic Warwick Brown shortly in House and Garden magazine.

Karen Sewell a Whitecliffe master’s student has developed photographic imagery to a high level and has already been a finalist in several art awards including the Wallace art awards in 2013.

Elle Anderson, who has completed a masters at Whitecliffe, works in a variety of media. The artists’ imagery is concerned with plants and flowers which have become “Plants out of control” and are now classified as weeds in New Zealand’s temperate climate. Many produce beautiful flowers and Anderson has preserved several of these in ethanol in glass blown balls. This method serves to magnify the plant or flower intensifying the shape and texture. Other flower and leaf imagery have been printed by the cyanotype photographic method on to cotton. This method is a 19th century photographic procedure which involves producing each image uniquely.

Paul Kim moved to New Zealand in 2004 from South Korea. Essentially a surrealist artist Kim paints his interpretation of the Northland landscape highlighting the abundance of natural features such as birdlife, harbours, beaches, bush and waterfalls. Attention to detail and stylized calligraphic illustration artwork is a traditional feature of Asian painting. His modern interpretation of New Zealand landscape in his unique style makes for compelling viewing.

Entry level prices are a benefit to supporting and buying emerging artists work and prices begin at $950 for several artworks. The step up to exhibiting in a Dealer Gallery can be a daunting one for emerging artists but each artist has approached this opportunity with enthusiasm and professionalism.

The exhibition runs from 3rd March to 21st March, with a late night for the Auckland Arts Festival event White Night (The Gallery is open on Saturday March 14th until 10pm).
