Mark Wooller
Born 1964, Auckland, New Zealand.
Lives and works in Matakana.
Wooller takes a look back on our land from a settler’s point of view, carving up prime spots within the thick, lush native forest. Areas now known only part of the Auckland metropolis are viewed afresh within Wooller’s work. Ponsonby, New Market and Queen Street are staked out, numbered and trees felled to make way for progress and land ownership. All of the details in a Wooller painting are meticulously placed. Through subtle use of shadow and thickly textured paint, Wooller enhances nature’s fundamental qualities, each tree within his bush scenes are painted in minute detail.
