Leo Vernon Bensemann, Leo Vernon Bensemann, OBE (1 May 1912 – 2 January 1986),

Leo Bensemann was born in Takaka in 1912.  He was a  New Zealand artist, printer, typographer, publisher and editor.

In the 1985 New Year Honours, Bensemann was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, for services to art, literature and printing.

Bensemenn moved to Christchurch in 1931 with his friend Lawrence Baigent. This is where they meet artist Rita Angus. On Angus’s nomination he joined The Group in 1938.  Bensemann was a core member of ‘The Group’, a coterie of New Zealand’s most important painters including Colin McCahon, Rita Angus, Doris Lusk, Olivia Spencer Bower and Toss Woollaston.
